v. Employment and the Blogopshere
The phenomenon of work blogging or the employment related blogosphere gives employees an unofficial outlet to vent and gives control to employees to network and discuss with people and about topics that can be related to or far away from their management and corporate culture initiatives "employee cynicism can potentially offer employees a sense of control and attachment to their own occupational or professional community, while at the same time providing distance from corporate culture initiatives." (Richards & Kosmala 2013)
Like bees travelling large distances and pollinating flowers by leaving the hive to collect pollen and nectar to then return to enrich the hive as a whole, the colonisation of the blogosphere by employees sharing and receiving information builds a broader culture among employees. Perhaps more beneficially than maintaining closed top down management enforced corporate culture initiatives.
The direction of management decisions can be understood objectively with insight from outside sources and diversity of ideas on how to deal with problems as well as possible further employment opportunities. People on the outside looking into the a work blog as a record of an employees thoughts about work also makes for a better understanding out in the public of what its actually like to work in that specific industry. Again like pollination the process is beneficial both ways, the flower benefits from pollinating seeds as the bee contributes to the hive. The public gains understanding of the internal initiatives and nitty gritty day to day goings ons within a company or industry.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog as it was simple and easy to read. I liked your link to the bees however it could have benefited from further connection to the corporate blogosphere. Some more references to the text throughout the piece would deepen the content and make for a more scholarly piece.
Grammatical error: Choose 'the' or 'a'.
'People on the outside looking into the a work blog as a record...'
The video was very interesting but you did not have any links to other information.
Do you think the new power in the hands of the employee is a good or bad thing? I think there are more costs for the employer than there are benefits for the employee.
Thanks ~ Melissa
Hello Ross,
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've come across your blog and I really liked your bee theme. I think it ties in really well.
The blog was well written and flowed easily, however, I would have liked to of seen a little more references to employee's rather than the bee's as much, just to even the comparisons out. I would also have liked to have seen some more references included, but overall I enjoyed reading this blog.
Hey Ross,
ReplyDeleteReally interesting choice of theme!
First off, the introduction is kind of one big sentence. This makes it hard to engage in the piece, so just be aware of grammar and structure!
I think the post would have progressed further if you talked more about what the employee benefits from blogging, such as support, or why exactly they feel pushed to have this sort of anonymity on the internet.
I liked your link with bee's as a working hive and system.
Good job
- Andrea
Love the Bee theme, had me intrigued before I even started reading, it's a great way to entice readers. I think the link between working bee's system and the human work place was an extremely interesting take on the topic, one which I would have never expected to see, making for an enjoyable read. I personally thought the post was well structured, however I do think the video link and pictures provided, while very interesting, did not add to discussion of the employees benefits from blogging and the blogosphere. I do love the bee theme, but make sure you don't get carried away lol. Also a few more scholarly references discussing the blogosphere and blogging in the workplace would have given the post a lot more depth.
ReplyDeleteGood work.
Hey Ross,
ReplyDeleteThis was a really interesting choice of theme for your blog, the relation of how the blogosphere related to the working bee's system as opposed to the human workplace made for an enjoyable read. I would however, have liked to have seen more connections in relation to the actual blogosphere, backed up by some scholarly references to further add depth to your arguments. For example, the employee benefits of workplace blogging, etc. The video that you used to back up your theme of the bee's work place was interesting but I don't feel that it added a lot of depth to the discussion of employment and the blogosphere throughout everyday life. Overall I enjoyed reading this blog, just some more examples would engaged your readers and made for a stronger argument. Good work
Hey Rossco
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy that your blog has a consistent theme and the way you relate the bees and their hives to the topic works really well. Although that the theme is great, some more references and connections to ‘Employment and the blogosphere’ really would have made this post a lot stronger. Your video was good but I felt it had a similar problem to what I stated before. Still an excellent blog and an interesting read.
Thanks
Nathan
